Pride had been, well a mess would be putting it lightly. He supposed he had every right to be after what had happened. After getting his legs terribly broken and his mouth sewed shut by a tiny psycho. All after being kidnapped. Again. Like his worst fear after spending ten years of his life with a mad man. Not that that guy had had anything on the tiny psycho. Though he supposed it had just been different sorts of madness more than anything he could really compare. Not that he wanted to. No, he didn’t want to think about it at all really. Let alone compare it.
He wanted to pretend both didn’t exist.
Honestly, that was what Andy had been helping him with in her odd way. She had been keeping him distracted, dragging him out of his room where he hid in darkness all the time. Darkness and guilt really. Guilt for how things had ended with Raea, after it hadn’t really been her fault but he just…he couldn’t. It wouldn’t have been fair for her for him to not do what he did. But that wasn’t the point of today.
The point of today was that he could feel his second change, his full transform from a fledgling into a full on vampire, coming up. Which meant he would be leaving school and starting on his future. Now, he’d like to mope around but he knew with that coming, though he didn’t know when it would be, he had to actually try to keep an eye on his future. Because as fucked up as he was feeling now, eventually he wouldn’t be feeling this way he would be better. And he would regret wasting this time. So he wasn’t going to.
He didn’t know if the change he was feeling in his gut would happen in a few days, weeks, or months. But he knew it would happen. It was coming. He was the right age for it too so why not? He nodded a little bit to himself and pushed himself out of bed. He had to try and focus on his future today and not his past, his past was not the sort of thing that he wanted to deal with today. Not ever really, but that was another hurdle to deal with for yet another day. No, today was focused on getting himself to his future.
He was sure certain people would be proud for that thinking but he shook his head. He got dressed, slowly, and made sure it was dressed to impress, even though he knew he didn’t have to. He was going to see one of his favorite professors, his professor in the area that he shined in for reasons he didn’t understand. He was just a good actor he supposed, but really, it had surprised him when Drama had turned out to be his favorite subject and of course that meant that Professor Hale was his favorite professor, being that she taught it.
And he was going to see her.
Because he figured if he had to pick a profession, well, why not have it be in the area that he loved? And also it meant that he would be able to keep up with the acting all the time, which he also enjoyed. And he would be able to help teach and be with younger students. He thought that eventually he would move on to teaching the younger years, those not yet at the academy. But he thought that, while he transitioned, working for Professor Hale as an assistant would be a good place for him, as long as she wanted his help and accepted it that is.
He hoped she would.
With that he pushed himself from his room and started walking for the classrooms, at a slow even pace. His legs still acted up from time to time but he had started jogging again with Juno to build them up, and he had swum a time or two since his first time a while back and that was helping rebuild the strength too. But all the same he kept an even pace when he could, it helped more than putting stress on it.
And it wasn’t like it took a long time before he was standing before Professor Hale’s room, the one she held her extra office hours in, and knocking on the door, waiting to see if she was in and would talk to him. He hoped so, he hadn’t thought to make an appointment but he supposed that just spoke to how scattered the usually proper boy was these days. Oh well, he was working on it, he’d get back to normal eventually. Or at least, he hoped so. All the same, he waited, patiently, to see.

Tabitha Hale was usually a very organized woman, but lately her mind was a little scatterbrained. After accepting Vincent’s proposal she had not only a wedding to plan, but classes to run, and no assistant. No one wanted to help her it seemed and she was running out of options aside from maybe offering a student a part time job with helping her. But she was just trying to organize her office at the moment. It became rather disorganized as that semester drew to a close and finals were coming up. She ran her hand over her face and continued to organize her many scripts and books that managed to go from her shelves to her desk. She couldn’t even sit at it because it was completely covered in scripts and books and student papers that she hadn’t graded yet.
She needed help.
Of course it also was worth mentioning that she needed another professor to help her. She had far too man class ideas and not enough time to teach them all. A class that just focused on Shakespeare and how his plays influenced modern writers, she was going to talk to Sabine about a class that examined the language of Shakespeare and how to translate it into modern English, she wanted to do so many things that her own mind hadn’t even figured out how to put them all down on paper…Speaking of which there was probably a list she was already making. If she could find her desk.
She was humming a song from her days in theater and her cat Amy was sitting on her chair, dozing in her chair. Tabby laughed softly as she saw her cat’s feet twitch and she scratched her behind the ears, the cat purring in her sleep. Tabby finished putting the books back on the shelves then looked at the stacks of paper scripts on her desk, which she quickly started alphabetizing on her shelves. She would have to put duct tape bindings on them later but for now she was putting them on the shelves just to get them off her desk. She knew after a few days they’d all manage to get back on her desk but she didn’t care at the moment.
Once the scripts were put away she looked back at her desk and picked up the papers she had to grade, she looked through them all before picking her favorite student’s –even though teachers weren’t supposed to pick favorites – and moved Amy out of her chair so she could grade it. She sighed when she read the name at the top, Pride Drakos. Something happened to him, between that winter dance and the beginning of the new semester. Andrea dropped out of her class and Pride barely went to class until he showed up limping and not his usual self. His smile was gone, and while Tabby didn’t want to pry, she was very worried about him. After a few months he started to look better, but she was still worried.
What happened to her favorite fledgling?
As she graded his paper she smiled to herself as his usual brilliant work shined through, and she placed an A+ at the top and her usual comments about what part she enjoyed the most. She continued to grade the papers with relative ease, and finished after about an hour or so. She looked them over a few times before she heard a knock at her door. She stood up from her desk and opened the door, smiling when she saw the fledgling she loved teaching so much. “Pride! Come in sweetheart! Can I get you anything? Don’t mind the mess; I’ve been having a tough couple weeks trying to get everything ready for finals.” She smiled, walking back in and pulling a chair out so he could sit down if he wanted.
She went about fixing things here and there before taking a better look at Pride. He certainly seemed better, and she was glad to see that he wasn’t falling over just by standing. Still, a chair was probably good for him to sit down and rest his legs. “You don’t have anything to worry about for finals, you always do wonderfully. Speaking of your last paper is on the top of the pile on my desk if you’d like to see your grade.” She smiled, looking over at him. Something seemed different, he had an almost focused look about him. “You’re not here to talk about finals, are you?” She asked him, moving back to her seat at her desk. Amy meowed and hopped up onto the desk near Pride, waiting for him to scratch behind her ears.

Usually Pride was a knowledge seeker, usually he ate up any sort of new type of knowledge like he would die if he didn’t get it, like it was as essential to him as eating or drinking. Like he needed it to survive. He supposed that this was a result of how he had grown up, how he had been denied a normal education and a normal way of gaining it that other children were able to get. He had been stuck with books in the corner, so the moment he had gotten free, the moment he was back in a normal life, he had started to seek out more and more knowledge with a sort of velocity most children didn’t.
It was how he had been up to speed enough to enter the academy at the same level as any other person that did. He had skipped grades, he had learned as much as he could. And it showed in his work, usually.
He had been skipping days, skipping classes, the past month or so while he had been recovering and then beyond that for various reasons. He didn’t want to leave his room, he was too busy sleeping or moping, he just didn’t want ot see anyone, he didn’t want to chance seeing certain people, he just wasn’t interested in anything outside his own room. It was bad but it was how he had been the past month or so, incredibly unlike himself. He had still kept track of the coursework, still handed in papers or homework when he could and thanked the teachers for giving him the extra time or understanding.
But it was still utterly unlike him. Which was part of the reason he had been a tad hesitant to go see Professor Hale. In the end, what dragged him there was the fact that she was his favorite professor, he knew she would understand. Along with the fact that he was going to make the change, so soon he could taste it and feel it in his veins. He had to start preparing for that, start getting himself ready for life in the real world outside of the Academy—which was, admittedly, not something he had ever gotten much taste of due to the unfortunate incidents of his childhood, before he had entered the Academy.
Anyway, he wanted to be a teacher some day, he thought. Perhaps a teacher of the younger years, thse who had not yet entered the Academy. He was good with kids and he enjoyed teaching and learning so perhaps. Or perhaps he’d become a professor here, he thought he could do that too. But starting small was always best, wasn’t it? He thought he would be a good assistant, and in his favorite subject? He could really be a help he thought, as long as it was alright and she needed the help. Which brought him back to seeing Professor Hale, and hoping that she needed an assistant teacher, because he thought it would be a good way to get into the new world outside of the Academy.
Plus, he was doing better. He was getting out more—not much but anything was a start, wasn’t it? And besides, he was out without anyone pestering for him to do so except for himself. SO it was definitely a good step in his eyes. And he managed to do it without a hint of a limp. He was going slow but, again, baby steps. He had managed to get back into jogging with his pup, which was likely what was leaving him fit enough to be able to walk without a limp. Was it really surprising that he had had one though? His legs had been broken five times.
He winced. Without his connection to his affinity—he had been too drained—that had sucked.
He pushed the thought out of his mind and continued walking until he got to Professor Hale’s office, where he knocked and waited to be let in. He smiled back when she opened the door and smiled his way. It was a small smile, a hesitant one but she was his favorite professor and he found it hard not to return the familiar gesture—which was another good thing. He was trying to keep track of the good things, trying to use that to motivate himself ot keep doing them.
He nodded and came in when she invited him, looking around and truly noticing that she seemed scattered. Perhaps this meant it was a better chance that she would agree? He hoped so. Either way, he shook his head with a small smile still in place and entered into the room, taking the seat that she offered for him, gratefully. His legs were fine but if he kept standing he wasn’t sure they would be and he didn’t want to make it obvious he had been hurt.
”I don’t mind at all, Professor Hale. I understand” he said, easily. He watched her bustle about changing up this or that and had to resist the urge to get up and help her, he had always been the sort who couldn’t sit while others were doing things but she was done soon enough and talking to him again about finals. He shook his head a little bit again, and ran his fingers thorugh his hair, which didn’t hel the slight mess that it was.
Before he could say anything though, she spoke again, mentioning that he wasn’t there to talk about finals and he nodded slightly, glad she had realized that before he spoke about finals just because he would feel bad to stop her in her tracks and be all “that’s not what I’m here for.” It was just not the sort of guy that he was. ”Ah, not really, no” he said with a smile, scratching the back of his head absently.
