He always kept himself on top of everything important regarding the camp in order to give the most profitable advice to the leader of the camp. He took his position and the safety of the camp very seriously. He cared about all of the members of their community and wanted to ensure their survival for quite some time to come. Now, it was possible that he didn’t display this affection and concern as readily as some others might, but he certainly had it. He just tried to keep himself objective and distant. He’d lost countless people in this fight and new world and he was sick of letting himself get too close to people just to have to mourn them later. As harsh as it seemed – he needed his strength because it was in the best interest of everyone. He would be no good to anyone in the camp if he couldn’t keep a clear head.
Unfortunately, that goal was becoming harder and harder to achieve with the presence of Holly and Bailey. He would never regret bringing them into the camp, but many days he wished he hadn’t let himself get so close and feel so responsible for them. They’d been so young when they came to the camp, at least compared to him and where he’d started in all of this. Despite their age, they had managed to survive in the forest on their own for quite some time before he’d found them and so he had initially found that a possible advantage to bring them in. Holly was spectacular in the areas she knew and was constantly learning more to help the camp. She never wanted more recognition and only wanted more to help. She was very selfless and Theo related to that. He saw her much like a younger sister.
Bailey, on the other hand, was an entirely different story when it came to how he felt about her. He should have been just as easy to see her as a younger sister, but even from the moment he had first set his eyes on her, he felt nothing but this intense feeling drawing him to her. She had a magnetism that he couldn’t explain. Her stubbornness, while troublesome for him, kept him entertained at the same time. She tried to play off their survival on Holly’s skills, but having known her as long as he did now, he saw how untrue that was. Bailey had this strong sense of loyalty and fierce desire in anything she put her mind to that meant she was the perfect pair with her best friend. As much as Holly had certain skills to help them by, Bailey had the assertiveness and stubborn persistence to make sure that Holly was as taken care of as Bailey was by Holly. Bailey’s skills and ways were much more subtle that she seemed to even realize. Theo had spoken to Holly on the matter before and listened as Holly went on and on about how much Bailey helped her continue on when she was having doubts that she hadn’t even voiced. The two girls had this connection that he tried so hard to understand. When the world was tumbling down, they stuck together with a ferocity he admired.
Bailey, in general, caused him to feel things he didn’t want to feel. He couldn’t deny in his own mind that when he got near her, a sort of buzz ran through the air, electrifying the particles between them. Whenever their skin or limbs touched, he felt a dryness in his throat and his mind would fade for a second. She was like the sweetest wine and the worst poison. All this time of distance and this one girl was unknowingly pushing through the walls he’d worked too hard to build around himself. He was surprised how much he’d been able to control his sometimes more selfish impulses. In his mind, despite the matter that she was well into her twenties now, it was still wrong to see her as more than a girl he should protect. Eight years wasn’t the worse age difference and in a world gone mad, it certainly didn’t matter as much as it might have once, but in his mind he kept rationalizing as best he could why wanting her as much as he did was wrong.
His thoughts were interrupted by the cool breeze suddenly flowing into his small work tent that he preferred to the nicer areas of the camp. He looked behind him from his chair and saw Bailey standing in the doorway. “B-Bailey.” He cursed himself inwardly for stuttering but she had caught him by surprise. “Is something wrong? Do you need something?” He’d just been letting himself go down that road of thought about his inappropriate feelings for her and suddenly she was there. Had he fallen asleep? It was late and a lot of the camp was asleep aside from the guards and the few people that stayed up as late as he did, but it was much quieter than the hustle and bustle of the daytime. “Come on in. Sit down, if you’d like.” She’d been standing in the ‘door’ of the work tent and she was letting the cool night breeze come in. It did make him feel better now that he could feel the sweat beading on the back of his neck from the mood of his previous thoughts before her entry. He just didn’t want her to be uncomfortable or cold standing there.

Bailey was getting tired of the heat, really tired of it. She walked around with the scouts in the mornings and evenings, and while the mornings weren't terribly hot the evenings were nearly unbearable. You would think she'd be used to the heat after living so long in the forest without air conditioning but if you knew Bailey you knew she was most at home in winter when there was five feet of snow on the ground and a chilly wind blowing through. She often chose to do the jobs in winter that nobody else wanted, because she loved being out in the cold that much. She was an aspiring ice skater before everything went to shit, of course she'd still want to enjoy the cold. That's when Holly let her ice skate. Of course because she couldn't practice year round her skills were rusty but they always came back quickly.
She just was not happy in summer. Especially during the day. She tended to stay in the shade or stick closer to camp in the summer, but in the evenings once the sun finally set things cooled off considerably and she rather enjoyed walking around the camp at night. She went to check on the guard dogs one last time before heading in some random direction. She looked up at the sky through the trees and smiled a little as she saw so many stars. You didn't see this many stars in cities or suburbs.
Funny, it took losing everything to notice how wasteful they were being.
The camp didn't waste anything, not a single thing. They couldn't afford to. Bailey was jealous of the vampires, who right now were probably enjoying an evening out or an evening in front of a fireplace reading a book. She didn't hate the vampires, Holly was a good influence for that. There was only one vampire she loathed and it was the one that started it all. The damn Monarch. He forced humans to act as slaves, “pets” he called them, or be killed. She lost her entire family, if they were even still alive she didn’t want to risk looking for them. She hoped her parents were still alive. She knew her dogs probably were adopted by the vampires that raided their neighborhood, or were even killed.
She wiped her eyes, trying hard not to cry. She cried her tears long ago. She couldn’t afford to shed any more. She pressed her hands to her eyes for a few moments before continuing her walk. The guard dogs gave her that outlet; the need to play and train the dogs helped her cope with losing her Emmy and Todd. Sure she had to teach the dogs to sniff out vampires and attack on command but they were also gentle dogs. She let the children of the camp play with them, only if she was with them, and the dogs were really well behaved. She just had to train them to be killers.
War did awful things. Every human that wasn’t a pet had to learn to survive, they needed to survive. Just wanting it wasn’t enough. While Bailey was a scout and knew basic fighting skills, and her years using her skate blades as makeshift knives helped, she needed to know more. She realized she wouldn’t last very long with her current set of skills and while other scouts were very willing to help and a few even taught her how to throw knives and shoot guns she needed to be better at actually fighting. She was agile enough, she just needed more help.
So Bailey decided to go to the only person she trusted enough with teaching her how to fight, and that man brought them back to the camp. She gulped when she realized she might get personal training sessions with Theo, but he was the one who trained the warriors and anybody willing to learn to defend themselves. She stood outside his tent for a while, staring at her nails and hoping he wasn’t sleeping. She didn’t want to wake him up if he was asleep, most of the camp started to go to bed for the evening. The only ones awake were the ones on scout duty, and Bailey never wanted the midnight shift. She didn’t trust herself to stay awake all night after a long day. The sun never set until after 9 in the summer so they used the light as often and as long as they could until they had to sleep.
That was another thing about vampires and humans; they were never on the same cycle. Humans were creatures of the sun, and vampires were creatures of the night. Bailey usually felt safe during the day, as most vampires were still sleeping, but Hunters and Trackers tended to try and walk around during the day. Bailey laughed silently to herself. When did her life turn into a post-apocalyptic video game?
She built up her courage and opened the flap of Theo’s tent, about to make her presence known by clearing her throat or saying his name but cool air rushed into the tent. He turned around from his desk and she smiled, a little embarrassed that she was barging in on him like this. She dug the heel of her boot into the ground and looked down before looking back up at him. God he was handsome, the sun really bleached his beard red, though she should have been used to this look on him living at the camp for a few years, she wasn’t. He was just perfect in her eyes, everything about him. “Ah, sorry. Nothing’s wrong, just wanted to ask a favor.” |
She gave him a small smile, nodding as he invited her in. She let the flap close behind her and the tent started to grow warmer again. Though if it was because the two were now in close proximity of each other she wouldn’t know, every time they were around each other it was almost like there was electricity jumping from both of them. She rubbed the back of her neck and took a seat near his desk. “I don’t know how to ask this, so I’ll just tell you. I need to learn how to better defend myself. I know basics but I figured since I used to ice skate I could learn some other ways to defend myself aside from the usual guns and knife tactics, like some form of hand-to-hand combat.” She shrugged, not looking him in the eye until she was done speaking. She was nervous, and very much afraid he’d say no. [/div] WORD: 1108Outfit: CLICKNote: I'm excited, are you excited? I'm excited.NOTE: Bailey's Speech Bailey's Thoughts
