● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● •• Standing frozen, arms hanging stiff at her sides; she could not move. If she moved, the door would open. She knew what was behind that door. She did not want to see it again. And yet, her body moved of its own accord, her right arm lifting, her hand tightening on the door knob. A push. And the door swung open before her, exposing a dark room. She moved forward, floating, unable to control herself. Her hand moved to the light switch, as it did every time, hesitating for just a split second...
•• She did not want to see what the light would show. She wanted to pretend everything was alright, that everyone was safe... Click... Blood. Blood everywhere. So much blood. Her mother’s favorite china lay in pieces all over the floor. Furniture was over turned. Glazed eyes staring lifelessly at her, accusing her of their fate. The lifeless victim’s throat had been torn out, blood pooling on the tile, running in tiny rivulets between the blocks. All this the light revealed. The evil light. Why couldn’t the light have stayed away? Kept this horror in the darkness? Tears glazed her eyes; fingers shook. Fear kept her rooted in place, staring, unable to look away.
•• A door creaked open behind her. She turned slowly toward it. She knew who it was. She knew that he would find her, that he would kill her like he had them all. From the dark in the doorway, a pair of gleaming eyes rimmed in red stared back at her. The shadow stepped into the light, smirking that evil smile...
•• Lizzy woke up with a sharp gasp of air, her heart pounding harshly in her chest, her breathing coming in sharp bursts. Green eyes glanced around the room frightfully, clutching plain grey sheets to her chest. It was just a dream. Just a dream.
This the redhead repeated to herself as her heart and breathing slowly eased. A breeze came in through her open window. “I thought I had closed that...” she muttered as she pushed her sheets aside and padded softly over to the window. •• Peering out, Lizzy shook her head and pulled the window shut and put the latch into place. She was dressed in a soft cotton night shirt that fell down to her mid-thigh but since it was still summer, it was not too chilly. But it certainly wasn’t decent to go out in it so Lizzy padded barefoot and quiet to her closet and pulled out a loose fitting strapless dress that fell to just above her knees, a pair of well-worn black boots, a pair of short black tights, a belt to tie around her waist, a long warm black cloak, and a pair of old sweats for if she decided to go swimming and needed something to change into after. •• Thusly dressed and with a knapsack slung over her shoulder, the redhead climbed onto the deck of her house and down the tree, moving down the branches with ease until her feet landed lightly on the ground. Her house was one of the ones up in the trees, well hidden by the canopy from below. It was very early morning, no later than five AM but since she was wide awake, she figured she would head out to the lake for a walk and maybe even a swim, depending on the temperature. She did love the fresh air and the Weapon Master wouldn’t need her until the afternoon today so she had a few hours to kill. •• Less than an hour later, Lizzy was walking along the majestic stretch of water. The Enchanted forest didn’t bother her anymore. She had grown accustomed to it’s noises and inhabitants. She eventually reached her favorite spot and set her knapsack down. For a few moments Lizzy stood still, gazing out over the clear reflection of the early morning sky. The forest was as it usually was at this time, quiet with the occasional chirp. Stripping out of her clothes, Lizzy dipped a foot into the water, sending ripples out over the surface of the water. It was on the cooler side but not bad. Dressed in absolutely nothing, Lizzy waded into the water and dove in once it was deep enough. The cold hit her skin in a sharp flash of cold but she was quickly getting used to it as she began to swim around. •• Lizzy had been swimming since she was a really little kid so it was a soothing and relaxing pastime for her. And after the nightmare that she had had she needed some of that. It was a nightmare that plagued her many nights of the year - a scrambled rerun of sorts of the night so long ago where Stefan had come after her and she had found her father in the basement holding her mother’s dead body. The memory sent shivers through her body but she quickly pushed it away and dove under the water, resurfacing a few feet to the right, brushing her hair back from her face and floating on her back for a moment, gazing up at the early morning sky with her rising sun. •• The fact that she was completely naked didn’t perturb Lizzy in the slightest. The chance of someone stumbling upon her this early was unlikely at best and even if it did happen, she could keep all but her head hidden under the water. The floating sensation of being held uplifted in the water was soothing and Lizzy found herself closing her eyes and just allowing herself to enjoy the weightless sensation. But something caused her to come back to the here and now. She wasn’t sure what it was but she suddenly had the odd sensation that she wasn’t alone. •• Narrowing her green eyes, Lizzy eyed the shore where it was a few meters away. But nothing unusual was going on. No snapping twigs. No crunching leaves. Only a squirrel rustling through the leaves of a nearby tree and some birds chirping. Shaking her head, Lizzy swam around some more. No one was there. It was just her imagination. But she found herself feeling suddenly incredibly vulnerable. Her weapons were in the pile with her clothes and knapsack. Her dagger, her military grade semi with it’s three valuable bullets she could not use unless she absolutely had to, and a hand-and-a-half sword... But they were on the shore. If a vampire were to stumble upon her she would be screwed... But the chances of that were unlikely this deep in the forest... Lils was up early, but when was Lils not up early? Even before the world had changed she had been an early riser at all times. Though, when the world was different, she had also gone to bed pretty early unless she had made plans to go out with one of her friends or a group, that had always been fun. But she had gotten up early in order to go to fencing practice, before classes when she was in college and to get some practice in with her brother or her father before school when she was in high school or elementary school. She had had a very strict schedule back then, focused on keeping up her skill with a blade. Because it would get her to college, keep her there, take her to the Olympics after her stint at the Junior sized on. Not that that ever happened.
These days she also went to bed very late, because she wasn’t good at relaxing and standing down ever. But after all these years, nearly ten now, she had gotten accustomed to having very little sleep. She didn’t mind though, she was used to it. Back before she hd joined the camp with her brothers she had gotten even less than she did now, even when they had rotating shifts she found that she was just never comfortable sleeping and only would when the sun was up in broad daylight, which was not easy to do.
But that explained why she was up before much of the camp. Perhaps not before the other warriors, but before most of the camp that got a chance to sleep in just a little bit more. She didn’t mind though, she wanted them to sleep. She wanted them to know that they were safe where they were and that they could sleep because the warriors kept them safe, and always would. It was their job around here and Lils at least took it very seriously.
She stretched and yawned, and changed out of the clothes she had slept in—when she had been in college she had slept in the nude but now she preferred to be able to leap into action at a moments notice and breasts tended to get in the way of that most of the time. And she changed into one of her other outfits. She had gone from the sort of the girl with closets full of clothes to having about five outfits at a time, depending on what came in, what was patched, what was wrecked. She didn’t mind. She didn’t want to attract any sort of male attention that nice cloths would bring her.
Her scar, she had been told, helped that. But she quite liked her scar. It added character, it spoke to the fact that she had fought in the war, been damaged, and made it out alive. It bisected the left side of her face, true, and went stiff from time to time but that was alright, she could handle that and much more. She still had her left eye, which had been the main worry at the time, and that was all that mattered. A little marring to her face was nothing to her, she was alive. She could see. Funny how war and your species being downgraded could change your priorities damn fast.
That wasn’t the point. The point was that she was awake. She yawned and set about strapping on her sheaths, her many sheaths, around her body that hid her weapons as she changed into her new clothes. The only one that was kept out and easily seen was her prize epee, the one that had gotten her through the war. The gleaming silver was the only best friend she needed aside from her brothers. She kept it on her at all times, it sat next to her bed when she slept, in perfect position to be grabbed and she did whenever she was startled from sleep, automatically. Dangerous perhaps, but so was she.
She left her room and banged on her twin brother’s door down the hall, in attempts to let him know that he should be up before she left the house that she shared with both of her brothers. Their house was only so big because they shared it, and because they had damn well built it themselves, that’s how long they had been at this camp. They had been around to build shit around the place. She snickered to herself as she left. Her squad wasn’t due to be up just yet, from the looks of the sky, and she decided she would patrol a little bit.
She headed out into the forest, a place that she knew well, and headed for Mirror Lake. She never went into it herself, that was not a good idea in her opinion. It was too well known with the vamps. That was why she generally went into it’s offshoots. But it was the only one big enough to get a real swim in. Not that she was planning to do that, she just knew if she wanted to see if anyone was about, the lake was generally the best place to check out first.
And a sound made her pause when she got there, on high alert, her hand automatically going for the weapon strapped around her waist. Until peeking through the bushes showed her just who it was in the lake. She didn’t know everyone at the Camp, she didn’t much care to because that wasn’t her job. But ow could she not know the weapon master’s assistant? They were both headstrong so there wasn’t much of a relationship there, but she did know her well enough to call out her name. ”Jeez, not a side I wanted to see of you, Lizzy”[ she called out in a teasing tone. She hadn’t really seen anything but why not, the girl’s clothes were over here so that had to amount for the comment being true.

She tried not to make too much noise, avoiding splashing around, but this was water she was in so she did make some noises as she moved about. She had just come up for air again after trying to catch a little frog and was just brushing her hair away from her face when she heard the voice. The frog had just barely escaped from between her fingers. Her back was turned toward the shore when she heard Lilah, her long red tresses covering most of her back, the water coming up to her ribcage.
•• Letting out a startled squeak, Lizzy dropped deeper into the water as she twisted around toward the sound so that only her chin and up was above the water. “Oh...Lilah...” she mumbled, mostly to herself as her heart recovered from it’s little shock, relieved that it was someone she knew even if it made the situation more embarrassing, “You startled me.” She didn’t know Lilah on a personal level, but she knew who she was and had always envied her a little in how strong and formidable she was.
•• Lizzy’s face was turning an unflattering shade of crimson as Lilah’s words registered and at being spotted by one of Camp Motalis’ Warrior Captains herself. Well... This I wasn’t expecting... Biting her lower lip, Lizzy glanced towards where her clothes lay in a pile. She wouldn’t have been nearly as embarrassed had it been someone closer to her own age, someone she didn’t look up to as much as she did Captain Sabera. While Lizzy tried to feign indifference around just about everyone, she had watched Lilah, especially when she was fencing. She had to admit that the captain was good at what she did, perhaps even, no probably even, better than Lizzy was herself.
•• Should she get out of the water and act like her usual confident, uncaring self? Or should she stay in the water where she could remain decent and keep herself from embarrassing herself even farther? “Umm... What are you doing here?” she asked as she tried to make up her mind. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Lils was an early riser. And of story. And sometimes that meant that she was up before her entire crew of Warriors, the ones she trained and the ones she sent out. The ones she got an overwhelming sense of guilt over if they didn’t come back. She blinked and shook her head, absently rubbing her fingers over her closed eyelids. No, that thought was a random one. She was a Captain Warrior, proud of her spot, even if she had to make the hard decisions sometimes. But anyway, back on track with her thoughts, right? Right.
At any rate, getting up early meant that she had time on her hands and she was currently using it in order to patrol around a bit, even though there was a different shift of Warriors currently on so that wasn’t necessary, Lils was just a little bit of a workaholic who couldn’t seem to help herself. Ever. It was a bad thing, really it was. She needed to learn how to sit still. She was just bad at that. To an absurd degree. Like people tricking her into taking a bad day level of absurd. She grinned a bit. Oh well.
That had led her to Mirror Lake, because that was a popluar place to go for both of the species so it was generally the sort that you could find someone at, if you were looking. And Lils did find someone, a naked someone but that sorta entertained her in an odd way, especially because she couldn’t see anything, she just assumed because of the clothes that were hanging out on the side of the lake. So she did what she did best, and acted like a bit of a bitch, calling out a slightly sarcastic and mostly teasing comment to the girl.
Who then squeaked.
She couldn’t help her grin, okay she was a bit of a brat, but she couldn’t help it either way. And then she rolled her eyes when she was called Lilah. She really disliked being called Lilah. To the point that she would refuse to acknowledge that it was her name at all. Which confused people but oh well for them. She shook her head when she said that Lils had startled her. ”Well…that was mostly the reason I did it, sorry”
she said with a look that clearly said just how sorry she was. As in. Not at all. ”And it’s Lils. Or Captain Sabera if you want to get really fancy. Lilah sounds like it belonged to a priss, doesn’t it?” she said, musing that last bit out loud. She felt like it was common courtesy in a way. She had addressed the other girl as Lizzy, she would take nothing else other than her own nickname, thank you. She did decide to be nice and not make mention of the fact that the girl seemed as red as her hair at the moment. So that was some sort of progress for Lils in the tact category. She’d have to tell her brother that after all of these years of being totally blunt she had managed to develop a little bit of that. He wouldn’t believe her of course but hey, why not? She was nearly snickering at her own inner commentary but she kept it together with a smirk. That was also progress of some sort. But at thirty one, she was pretty damn stuck in her ways. She asked what Lils was doing there and the woman lazily—not really lazy bit appearing to be so—placed both of her hands on the hilt of her epee, leaning so slightly until her shoulder was resting against the tree next to her. She shrugged the shoulder not against bark. ”I woke up a bit early, went for a patrol. And I’d return the question but I can see you’re swimming” she said, with a little nod towards the girl. No need to state the obvious, now, was there in that case? She supposed polite society would say otherwise, that she should ask and all that other bull, but Lils was never really good at being part of polite society, not once. She would have to be blind, however, to not notice the way she glanced towards her clothes or the way she was nervous. Or the color of her blush on her skin. And Lils might have been a bit of a sarcastic brat but she wasn’t cruel about it. She did have an odd sense of humor so it oddly entertained her that the situation was as it was, but that didn’t meant that she was mean, no. She was better than that, or she thought so at the very least. Which was why she decided to play nice, or at least as nice as she got. ”I can turn around if it’ll make you feel better to be dressed” she offered, as nice as she was trying to be it was hard for her to hide the amusement in her voice as she said it. All the same, she was a weapons girl herself, so she knew how it felt to be without them and could be sympathetic towards that at the very least. If nothing else, that is. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● •• It seemed almost ironic, really. Captain Sabera was not really all that different in temperament from Lizzy. She herself probably would not have acted very differently if their positions were reversed. Still, getting a dowse of her own medicine was an interesting and yet mortifying experience. Perhaps she should try to be kinder in the future and not so quick to tease others. Lizzy wasn’t mean or unnecessarily cruel by any means... she was just not the sweetest little gentle soul that many mistook her for and she had had to prove to people so many times that she wasn’t just some useless additional baggage to be protected and taken care of that it had made her a little... bitchy-ish.
•• Lizzy chose not to respond to Lilah’s admission that she had done it on purpose to startle her. She did incline her head slightly as the Captain of the Guard told her not to call her Lilah but Lils. She personally thought Lilah was a rather nice name but chose not to comment on that either to avoid offending the other female. Names could be a touchy subject for many and she supposed she could understand. Lizzy hated it when people used her full name. Elizabeth... It was so... stuffy... and old fashioned. Paired with Katherine... well you just had an awfully name. It was why she never even introduced herself as Elizabeth anymore. It was Lizzy. Sometimes Kat. Nothing else. End of story.
•• Lizzy glanced once more towards her clothes, glad that Lilah hadn’t mentioned the unfortunate pallor of her skin - the redhead could feel her skin burning. “Sorry. Lils. I’ll remember that,” she replied distractedly. She was caught a little off guard by the Captain’s lack of following social protocol in returning such a question but simply offered a smile, “Probably not the smartest thing to do but living life safely all the time is boring.” Honestly though, if whoever had stumbled upon her hadn’t gotten the upper hand over her so quickly, Lizzy could have reacted completely differently, causing the other person to feel uncomfortable through a sheer lack of modesty... But instead she was on the defensive... and it was not a pleasant feeling.
•• When Lilah said that she could turn around, Lizzy felt herself relax a little in relief. “Thanks,” she mumbled, still blushing, and once Lilah had turned, padded quickly out of the water towards her clothes, pulling on her undergarments after padding herself dry, and then the sweats she had packed - a well worn pair that was grey in color, not something she used to wear back when getting new clothes only required a short walk or drive to the mall and a credit card, but times had changed.
•• Strapping on her weapons, Lizzy felt like her armor was back in place, and with it, her self confidence. It was amazing what a few pieces of manmade metal could do. Her dagger went into a sheath in her boots, her silver baby - the military grade semi-automatic - went on her left side and her hand-and-a-half on the right. Thusly armed and confidence renewed, she turned to face Lilah and smiled, Much better. Full dressed and armed, Lizzy felt more like she was on common ground once more. “On a random note, I’ve always thought it would be a great experience to spare against you. Your reputation with your epee precedes.”

It was hard to ignore the amusement and slight teasing to her voice when she offered to turn around so that the poor girl could change. But there was also the fact that she had offered at all that should say something else. She was a weapon’s girl. She had had a sword at her belt from the time she could walk and only took it off at school where they would take it away if she was caught with it on her person because apparently it was dangerous or something. She was never without her epee now.
So she got the need to have it on you at all times, the way it felt more naked to be without a weapon than it felt to be without clothes. Or at least, that last bi was how she was. But she was also a confident little sucker who couldn’t help herself from time to time. And she had no shame. She wasn’t quite sure—judging from the color of her skin matching the color of her hair—that young Lizzy felt the same way that she did about that particular subject. But either way, she offered from that sense. Not that it showed in the way she spoke in the slightest.
All the same, despite her offer, Lils didn’t turn entirely around. Oh she wasn’t look at the weapon’s assistant as she changed—her preference was not that way, and even if it was Lizzy was far too young for her in that regard—but she was looking elsewhere. The only reason Lils would ever turn her back on someone was if they had their back to her and they were her partner on the battlefield and even then, unless it was her brothers, she was extremely paranoid about it. She couldn’t make herself entirely turn away.
Not that she watched, again. She kept an eye in the perriferals of her vision, but for the most part her vision scanned the forest, making sure they wouldn’t be jumped while Lizzy was vulnerable and Lils was amused. But even when she was amused, she was on guard. She had seen her parents killed, nearly had been herself, she had lost countless partners in battle and she had gained many more scars than the one that had nearly taken her eye. She was not the sort to ever let her guard down. It was how she had gotten her status, after all.
Once she heard the click of metal and the note of happiness from Lizzy she knew she was good to turn and she turned to face the girl, grinning and raising the unmarred brow at her. ”Better now?”
she asked, the impish grin still in place as she spoke. Vigilant, and with a reputation for being ruthless, she was also ruthless in her wit, it was just the way that she always had been. Tact had never been her style for all that she was refraining from commenting on the color of the girl’s blush. She grinned wider at the next comment she was offered. ”Well I would damn sure hope it did” she laughed, commenting on her reputation preceeding her. But then she looked over the girl, a note of serious in her eyes that hadn’t been there a moment ago. She kept tabs on the warrior types in the Camp, you never knew when one would end up in her Squad to replace another it was good to knw them before they came to. That wouldn’t be the case with this one but still, she was a warrior type. And Lils had heard through the grape vine that Lizzy knew how to use that sword that hung from her belt quite well. She leaned back on her heels and placed the palm of her hand on the scabbard of her epee as she thought and looked her over, not caring if she was obvious or not about doing so. She reached up with both hands then and tied back the long dirty blonde locks that would get in her way and nodded. ”Well then, it’ll be a while before I need to head out with my squad to the Citadel…” she mused. It was her day to go in and collect supplies—something that didn’t happen often because The Guard didn’t always trust that Lils would come back without bloodshed, she was on the side of those that wanted to fight and cause some chaos. But Lils also had sense and her twin brother to temper her. They had to wait until the sun was higher though, and her squad was most likely still sleeping. So that meant that she had a good amount of time on her hands. Why not spend it in an interesting way? ”Prepare for a great experience then, if you’re serious about wanting it, that is. I don’t do this shit half assed” she said, a cautionary note in her voice. Lils never did anything, not even a friendly sparring match, without putting her full force behind it. She would never hurt one of her own but it was never too sweet on her end. She tilted her head, waiting to see what the answer she would get from this one would be. She did hope she said yes, it would be entertaining at the very least to see what would happen. She sparred with her twin too much. They knew each other too well. This would be interesting, and new, for the Captain. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote] Words: 907 Muse: Good Comments <3
