Thankfully the night air was cool and crisp and the leaves had started to gather on the sidewalk below Easton’s feet. He listened the sound of his own stride and the crunch of the fallen leaves, sticks and such. It was almost soothing. The rhythmic sounds had begun to calm the bubbling nerves that where causing his stomach to churn and leap in his torso. He had plenty of reasons to be full of nerves. It had taken him what seemed like forever to decide weather or not to come back to school .
He left. It was simple as that. Hardly packed a full backpack and headed out the front gaits in the middle of the night. There wasn’t a thought process involved. After a bone chilling text from none other then his brother, telling him exactly where his father was and that he was going to find him, there was only one thought. Stop Connor. He had only grabbed one set of clothes and a few other items. It was crazy how back then he really thought it would only take a few days to track down his brother and put a stop to his brother’s life long dream of ending their father’s life. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time, but little did he know that he couldn’t have been more wrong.
A chill ran a rapid course right up Easton’s spine. It caused his whole body to shudder. He closed his eyes and turned on his heels. Going back was a bad idea. It had been too long…the days had turned into months and before he knew it, it was almost a year since he had left…give or take a little. Easton had become very bad and keeping track of time…minutes, hours, days…they all ran together. He probably couldn’t even tell you with certainty exactly what day it was, let alone give you a date too.
Everything would be different, hell he was different. His normally shaggy blond hair had been cut a lot shorter and in a desperate attempt to lose himself had been dyed a dark brown almost black. His style of clothes didn’t really change much, maybe a little more mature, if anything. He didn’t recognize the man that looked back at him when he looked in the mirror. Deep down he had always had the fear that he would turn back into the person that he was when he was in the depot. Red. Hateful. Murderous. Not Again
Easton’s retreat from his original direction didn’t last long. If he was anything he was definitely stubborn. He slid a hand out of his jacket pocket and let his fingers slide across the rough surface of the outer wall of the school. Should he just waltz in the front gates? No. He had no flair for theatrics like his brother. She might see him. His feet stopped, as did his heart. Oh Goddess How could he be worried about anything other then her? In the bottom of his pack was a stack of letters…countless in number tied together with a black ribbon. All of them were addressed to Raine, but not a single one did he manage to send. Coward He knew it. He had promised never to hurt her…and he failed. The familiar ache returned to his chest as he leaned against the cool rough stone wall. Deep breaths.
A gentle breeze shook a few leaves from the branches of the oak tree and they drifted down and grazed his upturned face. He had made it to the East wall at least. Easton opened his eyes, only then realizing that he had closed them at all. The wall. With out another moment lost, he turned and skillfully scaled the wall. He slung his legs over the edge and paused. He was almost hidden by the branches of the grand tree. It was slightly comforting. He pulled a few more deep breaths of the cool night air into his lungs. Maybe he’d just sit there a while…and watch…and truthfully try and gather the courage to risk going back to his room. If it was even still his to call his own. He rubbed his face with his hands.

Raine had been feeling a little bit out of it lately. Which was not like Raine in the slightest but it did happen from time to time. And who could blame her? There had been a lot happening in her life lately, enough for her to warrant a little bit of wallowing. Which was not like Raine in the slightest, she was usually a bouncy little thing that never let anything upsetting get to her for very long. She focused on laughing, not crying. It was the only way for her to keep moving forward anymore.
She had to deal with her father eventually, and his demand that she return home or give back all of her mother’s things because she would be disowned. With that thought Raine hugged her mother’s leather jacket closer around her small frame, and not just because the air was a little nippy out. She would never give up her jacket or her locket. It was hers, and she had taken it. Her father just wanted to be…well…horrible! Raine paused her walking and frowned. She never thought of her Daddy that way. No matter how rotten he had been. He was still her daddy.
She shook her head. Maybe it was just all the stress. Her best friend had been an upset mess lately. Which worried her so much. Seph was missing Seth, not that either of them would ever admit to that and she didn’t think Seph was ready for her to start helping Seth make the right gestures to get her back. Which she would do, that wasn’t an option. She wanted her best friend happy and they still loved each other, she knew that without a second thought. It was as plain as day to her, even if they were being stupid about it.
Speaking of love.
Oh…
She paused again in her walking and sighed a little bit. Raine never sighed, she had been doing too much of that lately. She fiddled absently with her headphones and her iPod, changing the song and walking again. She missed Easton a whole ton, more than she could even think. She just wanted to know that he was okay, and not hurt somewhere. She was so worried about him. Raine didn’t appreciate the lack of notice to him just disappearing of course, but it was more that she was worried than anything else.
And there was also the other thing.
Right. You get easily distracted by shiny things. And he’s shiny. That had been Seph’s response when she had gone in that night, freaking out because she had cheated. Oh Goddess above. She did get easily distracted, and it had been her birthday, and she had felt so very alone, and then he had showed up and had been so sweet and one thing had led to the other and then… Well then she had satisfied an itch that hadn’t been scratched for a little while.
Thinking about her track record with guys, she should probably be more amazed that she had lasted that long since Easton had goen missing. But that was no excuse. And he had disappeared with no warning… But that was still no excuse! She scolded herself with a little frown. Or was it? No…no it wasn’t. She shook her head. She couldn’t give herself a way out. She would just have to tell him. Right, because how was she going to go about doing that? She thought with a little sigh. She could just tell him if he ever showed back up. No. No, when he showed back up.
She sighed again. She really did miss him a lot, despite what she had done. She had been good since then, not that that was much of an excuse. Raine was really easily distracted, this was entirely true. And she had never managed to keep a boyfriend or even have one before because of this fact of how she was. But she didn’t really have an excuse for it all the time. She kept telling herself that because otherwise she knew she’d whole up in her room with Seph and worry herself to death about what she had done.
And at least one of them needed to be out and about.
She nodded definitely. That was all that came down to. She had gone out that night to her Dance lessons, the first time she had gone in some time actually. She had started to a few times but then she would get distracted. She’d worry about Seph, or Easton, her the thing with her father and she’d get distracted from her destination, wandering off somewhere else instead. But it had felt good to get back to her dancing, even if she felt horribly out of practice.
She whirled as she walked now, feeling the pavement scrape on her bare feet because she was bare foot as she walked back to the House from her lesson, her shoes in her hands. She was fine though. It was chilly but her jacket kept out most of the chill and so did her leggings that she wore to practice, they were special to keep out the cold and all that. That felt a bit better, to dance and to be able to move a bit.
She made her way into the house though the main entrance but decided not to head right to her dorm. She wasn’t sure she was ready for that yet. As much as she loved her roommate, it hurt to see her so upset as she was. So instead she started to head for the East Wall, where she was going to relax for a little while. She made it there fairly quickly too, she had been too in her own thoughts to be paying much attention and blinked when she got there, surprised about how quickly she made t there.
She plopped down to sit on the grass at the base of the tree, leaning back against its rough bark with a soft breath as she tossed her shoes beside her and closed her eyes. She pulled up her knees to rest against her body and took a deep breath before opening them again. Maybe she’d just sit here for a little while before she went back to her room.
If she had known who was just above her, just out of sight, she probably would have been a lot less calm. Heck she would probably be squealing happily, all thoughts of everything else far from her head.

He risked so much leaving. His life and his relationship with Raine being the biggest risks. He continued to rub his eyes while he rehashed what happened while he was gone…for what felt like the millionth time. It felt like he had been gone for ages...honestly he had been very lucky to find a school in the vicinity of his father's location. The dumb bastard wasn't as far away as he could have been...or really should have been. It wasn't easy finding shelter from the day time sun, while he waited to convince a vampire that he needed shelter...other schools were not used to blacks yet. It took time...Easton had known for years where his father was. It was a secret that he kept from Connor on purpose because there was no doubt in his mind that Connor would try and kill their father if he could find him. Connor had way too much of the feral side of the red in him then Easton did.
Easton found out that keeping a close eye on Connor nightly was an exhausting chore. His brother stalked their father for quite a long time. A few times Easton confronted Connor, but it always ended badly and caused him to lose track of Connor for days at a time. The physical fights between them always left Easton with just more frustration and a few battle wounds. Recouping was a pain physically and mentally...but as long as he could keep an eye on their father, he could keep him safe. He had no idea how much he would learn just by doing that. There was so much more than he ever imagined...Hell it took longer than he ever imagined...and it became something much more complicated as the time went on.
Easton rubbed his face a little harder before opening his eyes, trying to being himself back to the present. He could hear the soft sound of barefoot steps approaching. He forced his eyes to blink a few times to bring back their sharp focus. Just as his gaze fell upon the delicate frame, his body immediately sucked in a sharp breath. It felt as if his chest would split in two. Oh hell. He pulled himself quietly back into the shadows. The universe sure felt like punishing him tonight...or at least it seemed like it. Raine looked so sad and it killed him to know that he was the source of the pain that she carried on her delicate shoulders.
The internal struggle began. Should he make himself known to her? Or sit like a coward in the shadows? Honestly he prayed the goddess would just strike him dead at that very moment for all the awful things he had ever done. The silent moments passed and he sat there hardly even breathing. Ok...well it wasn't the universe's plan for him to die...well die again...either way he didn't want to be sitting up there debating his mortality. He slid his cell out of his pocket. His fingers navigated the touch screen silently and found her number in the address book.
"Hey." he typed... but in a moment of indecision he deleted it. Easton sat there silently cussing himself out. Coward. Then he typed it again. Easton's finger hovered over the send button for a second before deciding to press it. There. It was sent. No taking it back now. He kept the cell palmed in his hand and he quietly watched from above. He felt a bit like a stalker, but he technically was there first. Easton almost smiled. He felt lucky to just be able to look down upon her. Hell he knew he didn’t deserve it. Deep down Easton knew that he never really deserved her to begin with. He knew that the moment he laid eyes on her in the door way of his dorm.
He was nothing but a crow chasing a butterfly.

It had been an…interesting few weeks. To say the least. Yeah…that was really putting it lightly, Raine thought with an easy tilt of her head that sent her blond curls sprawling over her shoulder. Interesting should probably be replaced with upsetting but this was Raine we were talking about here. She refused to ever admit that anything could possibly be depressing. That was just the way that she was. She preferred to think on the happier side of life, tune out the depressing stuff. Most people would probably tell the bubbly little blue that that wasn’t healthy. But she didn’t care.
She ignored the naysayers. Why shouldn’t she? It was better to laugh, show a happy face to the world. Why would it possibly be better to cry? She lived this life for her mother and sister who had died way too soon, she wasn’t going to let them down by being depressed, and she wasn’t going to dishonor the fact that they had been taken from this world too soon by not appreciating the fact that she had made it out of that crash alive. Right? Right. She was pretty set on that.
Like her father was pretty set on her coming home.
Raine frowned at that, an odd expression for her and it felt unnatural on her lips. Her Daddy was dying and wanted her to come home so she could learn how to take care of the business…blue fledgling or not she wasn’t allowed to turn him down apparently. But she didn’t want to go. She wanted to dance, she wanted to be free, she didn’t want ot learn how to take care of a company, that wasn’t in her future as far as she was concerned.
But if she didn’t go he was threatening to take back all of her mother’s things. Of course the then morbid thought that popped into her head was that he was dying and it would all get left ot her soon enough, soon as they noted that in her mother’s will it all went to her. Her mother hadn’t been too far of her Daddy in the end. But she didn’t want to think like that. She was Raine. She didn’t think like that. She was bubbly and she was happy but this had her all out of sorts. She wasn’t acting much like herself at all and that wasn’t even the half of it!
It was indeed very odd to see Raine unhappy. Which was probably why she was avoiding going near any of her friends—not that they weren’t busy falling apart and such—or to her room. She was always the bubbly one, always the happy one who worked to put a smile on everyone elses face. That was just what she did, what she felt like it was her job to do. And most of the time, she was genuinely just a happy nd bubbly little nut. But lately that wasn’t entirely so.
And she didn’t want to go back to her dormroom with her pouty face. Her roommate had enough to deal with without having to deal with Raine pouting. She would ignore her own issues to focus on Raine and cheering her up and Raine just didn’t think that was healthy. She would ignore that that was what she usually did. Now that made a giggle burst from her lips like a few hundred bubbles. And that made her grin slightly. Well that was better. She was supposed to be like that. That made her feel like she hadn’t entirely lost herself.
Just her boyfriend. And a good chunk of her friends. Now she was frowning again as she approached the East Wall and the lovely tree that sat there, which she soon sat against after dumping her shoes down next to her.
Usually if she didn’t feel like sleeping or going back to her room, she would go about dancing. Practicing in the studio. It had been so long since she had danced aftera ll because she was so out of it and upset lately that she probably should get to practicing, get her body back in shape and make herself a better dancer again. But right about now, she just felt like sitting for a little bit, relaxing against the tree and looking up at the stars. Most fledglings were still asleep now so it wasn’t like she would be disturbed.
Deep breath. In…and out.
And then her phone buzzed in her pocket. In a typical Raine reaction, for a moment she just blinked down at it. She wasn’t’ expecting anything from anyone. She hoped it wasn’t her father. But she wouldn’t know until she dug it out and checked now would she? A soft giggle—not as bubbly as always but still there—passed her lips at that thought.
Digging her phone out of her pocket, she blinked at it for a moment before unlocking it and going to the message. Now she ahdn’t been expecting that. She hadn’t gotten anything from him in so long not that she was complaining but she just plain was happy now. For a moment it was just a bright smile that lit up her face, not thinking about how long it had been, or about what she had done on her birthday, but just being happy for a moment, pure and simple.
Easton had texted her. That was what had brought a grin to her face.
And in true Raine fashion, something that had been hidden for a while, she replied the same way that she spoke: babbling and long. Normal people would just say hi and leave it at that. Raine would happily give a novel but she just couldn’t help herself! ”Hi! How are you? Are you okay? It’s been so long, I’ve been worried. I hope you’re okay.” she replied, knowing full well ti was babbling and not caring. She missed him. She hoped she would see him again soon, not realizing he was closer than she could have imagined.

Easton sat there and the moments passed so slowly that he felt like he was in pure agony. He blinked not realizing he had closed his eyes and his chest ached. Apparently he had been holding his breath again too. It took a moment for him to notice that his text had made her happy. Happy? He didn’t deserve to be the reason she was happy. He could assume responsibility for making her sad, hell…he expected her to be let down by his actions by now. How could she be so happy after how he left with no words, no good bye…no letters…nothing? The silent alert from his cell in his palm broke him from his thoughts. The cell’s screen glowed ever so slightly. Once again his fingers navigated the touch screen to bring up her reply. He almost laughed because it was exactly like her. He said one word and she had a million more for him. She wasn’t pissed like he had expected her to be instead she was concerned and that killed him.
He could have sent her a text, a call or one of the many letters weighing down the bottom of the pack on his shoulder. Shamefully he didn’t do any of those things, not a single one. Now that was his fault and he knew it. Things had gotten so complicated. He felt like he was under such a watchful eye of the Vampire that took him in. It was hard enough to get his time to keep tabs on his father, let alone anything else. A sudden chill made Easton shudder and brought him back to the present. He would have time to mull over what he was to do next with everything that had happened later, but right now the woman he loved was sitting below him waiting for a reply. He reread the text she sent him:
Hi! How are you? Are you okay? It’s been so long, I’ve been worried. I hope you’re okay.
He swallowed hard and tried to ignore the knot in his stomach. There was way too much he needed to tell her. Was that right? Did he need to tell her everything? Would it be horrible of him to just tell her the basics and leave it at that? Probably. He frowned at his phone. He didn’t want to lie to her and hurt her more then he already had. His fingers slid over the touch screen and all he could type was “Sorry.”
He sent it and sat there. Ok so he wasn’t exactly too clear, so he decided to try again. “I’m ok. I’ve missed you terribly. I’m sorry I’ve been gone so long…I’m so sorry.” He sounded like the idiot he felt like. Oh well, he sent it anyway. At least it was the truth and he really meant it. That was a good thing, right? He tried not to sigh and give away his location.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a second. Ah hell. He could smell her and it made his mouth almost water. The night in his dorm bathroom flashed through his mind and a delicious shiver racked its way up his spine. The thought of that night together made his fangs descend enough to pierce his lip but it was unnoticed to him. Under normal circumstances he was much more aware of his fangs, but Raine tended to bring out a different side of him. His nerves started to wash away a little. If she could love him through that, could she love him through this? He’d never know if he didn’t ask her, now would he? Easton was usually a logical kind of guy, but for some reason with her his mind tended to get all mixed up with his heart. Love does funny things to people sometimes and Easton apparently was not an exception. He hadn’t realized he was biting his lip until the taste of his own blood hit his tongue. Fuck. Quickly he licked his lips and wiped at his mouth.
Ok, no more just sitting here. He couldn’t justify just sitting here any longer. Silently and very slowly he eased his way down from the top of the wall. He had so much practice at being absolutely silent while moving and the fact that he once was a red helped him a ton too. He didn’t plan on scaring her. He took her distraction with her phone to lean against the tree just behind her. He would wait until she replied to send her a “Turn around” text. His whole body was almost shaking with anticipation of being able to wrap his arms around her and feel her body pressed against his again. Easton was suddenly very sure he did the right thing by coming back…he felt like an idiot for thinking he could do without this girl.
Words: 814 I think Muse: All over…what an emotional nutbag Outfit : ~*~ Outfit ~*~Notes: Sorry he is so up and down lately! Just assume that she gets the "turn around" text after she replys to him...if that's ok, or however you'd like to play that out.

Raine had been through a rough couple of weeks. It had been rough and there was a lot on her plate. She had been dealing with it as best as she could, with her usual smile and her usual bounce so no one really looked twice. No one needed to deal with her problems when they had their own to deal with. That was how she felt about it anyway. So she just kept the laugh going, kept the smile everywhere but her eyes, and everyone was so distracted…only one person had noticed but that hadn’t ended…well. Oh it had ended well. But she probably shouldn’t have…
Anyway. While she was on her own she could let her guard down a little, she could be a little bit sad. Tears were okay as long as laughter came first. She didn’t realize she wasn’t alone, if she had known she would have kept her sighs to herself. In fact she wouldn’t have even felt like sighing had she known who it was that was making her not alone! But she didn’t know because she couldn’t see him. Which was obvious at least to her if she had known. Woah that was confusing.
But a text from him had the same affect. It had been a simple hi but that didn’t matter, that was enough to make her suddenly blossom into a grin, and feel a knot undo itself in her chest. And a bit of relief all in one. She hadn’t heard from him in so long, she had been worried! That would be an understatement honestly. She had been more than worried, she hadn’t heard from him in so long! But that was okay because she had heard from him now. And that made her so very happy.
So of course, because she was happy about it, she replied in true Raine fashion. To his one word text message he got a very long reply. She was just that way. She couldn’t just say one thing, she babbled. And besides! It had been so long she had to say that much, she had to know if he was okay and make sure that he was. She had to. She couldn’t help herself! She happily sent him the text and then settled back against the tree once more, feeling better than she had in a while. This was good. This was very good to her.
She waited, to hopefully get a text back from him. For a moment she worried she wouldn’t. What if all she got from him was the one message, what if that was all he wanted to send her? Would it all disappear again? She shook her head. Buck up Raine she chided herself mentally. Why would that happen? It would all be okay, it would all start to be okay again. She had to believe that, she really just had to. It made it all a little easier to smile when she thought like that.
And then she did get a message back from him. It was just one word again, but that was okay! One thing was always better than nothing. That was how Raine’s mind worked anyway. But then a moment later she got a longer one and she read it over, just oh so very happy to be talking to him. She didn’t care that it had been so long, she was so happy. It didn’t take so much to make the nut happy, she was determined to live her life happy. That was all there was to that!
She replied easily, feeling all warm and happy to be talking to him, even if it was just over text message. He was sorry. She shook he rhead. She didn’t want him to be sorry. She could always forgive him for just about anything, she cared too much about him for otherwise. And she, well, she loved him. She had said it before and she absolutely meant it. She didn’t do things half way. She shook her head slowly again, her blond curls getting a little tangled up with each other as she did but she barely even noticed the movement, to wrapped up in her own little happy moment.
She needed this.
”Oh don’t be sorry. Please don’t be sorry? I’ve missed you too. So much” she replied just as easily as anything. She missed talking to him and even though it had been a while it felt as easy as breathing to be talking to him again. Absently she fiddled with the end of her scarf that had been loosely strung around her neck. She should probably get back to her dorm room and stop sitting out here, moping, but at the same time she didn’t really want to move that much. She was content. To text and sit against the tree.
And then her phone buzzed again and she looked down at it, halfway distracted until she read what it had to say. For a moment she just blinked at it. Turn around? Why? Why was he sending her messages that said she should turn around? She shook her head, but as always, Raine was a curious little thing so it wasn’t like she wasn’t going to turn around and see what he wanted her to turn around to see.
And all thoughts of what could it be, how could he know where she was to make her turn around, they all disappeared.
Her storm colored eyes just went wide for a moment, unsure how to exactly react, just for that moment the ever moving, ever bubbly Raine was still. But just for a moment and then she was on the move again, as usual.
”Easton!” the little shriek was out of her mouth, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. It was surprised, excited, happy, disbelieving…if all those things could be fit into one word. But that wasn’t all that happened in that quick moment after her shock of seeing him was over. In that moment she also managed to somehow get her legs under her—she would thank her affinity for that one—and launch herself into him. No grace there. Just pure launch. She needed to feel him to believe he was really there, feel him right there against her.
And he was really there. Oh she thought she was going to just…burst. Half of her was so excited she wanted to dance and move and the other half was calling that half stupid because there was no way she was moving one inch away from him. Not when he was right there for the first time in what felt like forever. She sighed softly, happily. And then she inhaled and his scent was just…there. She felt like for that moment she could forget she was so torn apart by what was going on.
She had missed him.

Easton had taken the time to read her text, even though he already had a message typed and ready to send. She didn’t want him to be sorry, but he just couldn’t help it. There was so much he needed to make up for. He hit send and stood there waiting for her to receive it. It felt like every fiber in his body was shaking with anticipation. The muscles in his legs tensed as if they were ready to move him forward at any moment. All he could do was wait while she sat there looking at her phone. He wanted to know what she was thinking at that very moment. Honestly he expected her to ask why and stay right where she was, but instead she turned her head.
Just the sight of her face made his breath catch in his chest. Easton smiled a little at her, nervous that she might just get up and run away. Nervous that things would go wrong. That this perfect little moment in time wasn’t actually happening. Her eyes were so wide, that he really was worried for a second. All the apprehension he was feeling quickly disappeared as she scrambled most gracefully and launched herself at him. She was a little thing but she hit him hard and he almost stumbled back a little as they collided. He managed to keep himself upright and wrapped his arms around her delicate frame. The full scent of her hit him all at once and he took a deep breath and just closed his eyes holding her tightly.
Hell now he was actually trembling. No words came to him, even when he knew that he should say something. All he could do was focus on her. He bent his head down toward her and the smell of her shampoo in the soft curls of her hair hit him. He knew he was holding her tightly and made an effort to loosen his grip on her. He wasn’t about to let her go, instead he longed to feel her soft smooth skin under his fingertips again. Naturally his hands slid down her sides and his fingers fumbled to slide under her top. There was so much of her that he missed. His left hand pressed against the smooth skin of the small of her back and he couldn’t help but nuzzle his face down and closer to her neck. The way she felt wrapped up in his arms was too much, he just couldn’t help it.
His lips searched out the bend where her neck met her shoulder and he placed a few kissed there. His right hand was free to slide up her back and gently touch the back of her neck. It was almost over whelming to have her in his arms again. All he could think of was their connection. No words would come to him. It was like his brain was overcome by his other senses. All Easton could hear his own heart pounding in his ears as his kisses went up her neck. The urge to take her lips with his own was so strong that he couldn’t hold off any longer. The kiss was full of urgency and longing. It was probably a bit rougher than he planned but it was been way too long. It took almost everything in him to release her soft lips to catch his breath. He rested his forehead against hers. “Hi…” he almost whispered. There was so much more he needed to stay but the words just wouldn’t come to him. It was like everything he had planned to say on his way over here went flying out and into the night when her body collided with his. Nothing of that mattered to him right now. It was all her. Raine had been in a mood for a while, which was weird for her. But a lot had gone on recently so she really couldn’t blame herself, could she? She had dealt with a lot! She frowned a tiny bit, a testament to how unlike her usual bubbly self she had been for the past little while. It was hard for her. She had family stuff going on, she had been missing her boyfriend something fierce and she had been worried about her best friend, to the point that she was debating sabotaging her and helping her get together with someone new or back with Seth.
All in all, she hadn’t been her cheery self lately. It was weird but it happened from time to time. No one could expect her to be happy all the time. But all the same, she had put on her grin and her bouncy attitude so that no one would worry about her, and so that her best friend wouldn’t have more to worry about, and she had gone through her funk with it, just bouncing right along. But right now, right now she was on her own so it was okay to let the smile slip a little bit.
Until it had come back with a vengeance as soon as she had gotten a text from Easton, and this time it was a genuine as anything could possibly be. She had missed him! Did that make her less of a strong woman that she got a little bit more happy and bubbly the moment that she got a text from the boy she loved? She didn’t think so. Besides she never put much stock in that stuff anyway in the first place. SO she didn’ really care what anyone thought. Besides, she was alone.
Or at least she had thought as much.
But she couldn’t have been happier to have been proved wrong if she had tried. She didn’t mind being wrong because in this instance being wrong meant that he was here, he was really right here beside her. Or rather, behind her. She didn’t care where he was in relation to her as long as he was here. All the other stuff could bite it as far as she cared. She hadn’t exactly understood his text when she first had gotten it. Why would he be telling her to turn around?
She supposed normal people who didn’t have her ditzy mind might have relized it as soon as they got that text, but Raine had been more than a little bit out of it lately so she had to forgive herself a little bit and she did. She was allowed a tiny slip as far as she was concerned. And besides, what did it matter? Nothing mattered, and nothing that had been bothering her really was present in her mind at that moment. All that mattered was that he was here, he was right here and she thought she might burst.
And then one could say that she did. Well in a way she exploded. She went from being still and quiet one second to yelling out his name and bursting from her sitting position to launch herself at him and wrap her arms around him as tight as she could. She couldn’t tell if it was him trembling or if it was her. She clutched as tightly to him as she could, as if she were afraid he wasn’t really there, or he was going to disappear, or something like that. She just didn’t want to let him go, she couldn’t let him go.
Oh she had missed him. She took a deep breath and just inhaled all that was him. It had been so long, too long since she had found herself just entirely wrapped up in him and she refused to move. She just wanted to stay here and revel in the fact that he was here. Oh Goddess she thought she was going to just burst but she was just…going to cling to him right now and never let go. She hoped he didn’t have any other plans for the rest of his life. She didn’t think she had really realized the extent to which she had missed him. Oh she had, she knew she had. But this relief was so heavy in her chest. The guilt of what she had done before while he was gone would hit her later. Right now, se just wanted to cling to him, wrap herself around him and breathe him in.
He was holding her tightly but she didn’t care, she was pretty sure she was holding him just as tight. Well, relatively considering he was stronger than her but whatever. That wasn’t the point. Her eyes slid closed when his hand slid under her shirt and she didn’t much care that they hadn’t said two words to each other, she knew how it felt and she wanted to touch. She wanted to remind herself he was here now. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders when his head dipped, just holding him as close to her as she could.
Her fingers clutched at his shirt as she felt him touching her, kissing along her neck. They were such little things but they felt like they were undoing her. She had never felt like such little touches could mean so much to her before. She felt herself wishing to touch more of him, to make sure he was all there, just as she remembered, and her own hands loosened from his shoulders to slide down and dip under the fabric, touching skin and remembering what she had missed for far too long. She had missed being able to have such a simple touch.
She was glad when his lips found hers though. She was pretty sure she was five seconds from tugging his head away from her neck so she could do the same thing so that was good. Very good. She met his kiss and a soft noise left her lips as she pressed as close as she could to him, returning his kiss with the same passion she always had and it just felt so damn good. She didn’t care that it was rough, and urgent, and longing. She wanted that and she could return it.
She let out a small breath and closed her eyes for a moment when his forehead touched to hers, before opening them again at his words. She looked up at him, eyes darting about his features as if wanted to make sure he was all there, before her eyes met his again. The corners of her lips quirked up in one of her typical, bubbly smiles and she reached up, sliding her hands from under his shirt to cup his cheeks gently, she couldn’t get enough. ”Hi” she whispered back. But then, far be it for Raine to be content with such a simple one word answer. ”I missed you. I missed…all of you, everything, just…you” she said, not sure if she made sense but she wasn’t’ entirely sure how to verbalize what she felt. Weird…for her.

The pain and struggle of the last year seemed to all melt away the moment he touched her. It didn’t matter that he brother was dead…his father was dead…the vampire that took him in was dad, or least as far as he knew she was. He was the only one to walk away from the entire mess. It had taken him at least the last two months to convince himself that he was ok to go home. Home. His real home was here, right here with her. He had been a fool to think that he needed to stay away. There were plenty of reasons, or so he thought, that would make him too dangerous for her to be around. He had sworn never to return to the way he was when he was crimson and yet three were dead by his hands. It took those two months to convince himself that he wasn’t the old version of himself. That part of him was gone, at least as gone as he could manage. He was ok…he was fine…as long as he had her here with him. He would never leave again.
His body was trembling as he held her and there was nothing he could do about it. There was just something that she did to him that he couldn’t explain. When her hands touched his skin it felt like he was on fire and it was amazing. His body reacted and he couldn’t help the soft noise that escaped past his lips. It was as if his brain decided to just shut off and his basic instincts kicked in. It was all he could do to stop himself from ripping off the clothes she was wearing. He had to take in a deep breath to clear his head and focus on not hurting her. Easton knew he was much stronger than her and could easily hurt her without meaning too. No one he had ever been with could do the things that she did to him. Before her, Easton had been with others, but never had they ever had such an effect on him. She was different in so many good ways. It was almost overwhelming to him in this moment because he had been away for far too long.
Automatically his eyes closed as she cupped his cheeks in her soft hands. It was heaven to hear her voice. It was strange because he hadn’t heard it in so long and yet he hadn’t forgotten the wonderful sound. Many a time had he woken up from dreaming thinking he had heard her voice, it had never left him. But now it was real, she was really here with him and it wasn’t a dream. “I’ve missed you too…” he blinked his eyes open and studied her face before continuing. “I’m sorry.” Like his words could make up for being gone for so long, for everything he had done, for everything he had put her through. It was a start. Right? Again he had to remind himself to breathe. Just breathe. Every breath brought the scent of her to him and his mouth watered. Again it was getting hard to concentrate on anything other than what his primal side was screaming at him to do.
Trying to concentrate he leaned back a little pulling his face back from her hands. He wasn’t about to break their embrace, not for a million years. “I’ve missed you…so, so much…” He brushed some of her curls back over her shoulder and his fingers lingered on the delicate skin of her neck. Concentrate. He bit the inside of his lip until it bled as his eyes lingered on the soft skin of her neck and shoulders. Concentrate. Softly his fingers traced little circles there on her shoulder. “I’ve missed every…inch of you…every part…” He swallowed hard. When did his throat become so dry? Concentrate Easton. “I wrote you almost every day.” His words were a little slow coming out; he was having such a hard time keeping it together. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “I never sent them…” he made a face. “I’m sorry…” the tiny circles continued. He couldn’t think. No more words would come. He pictured running his fangs across her soft skin just enough to send goosebumps racing across her body. Just the thought of how sweet she tasted under his lips caused his mouth to water. Easton tried to clear his throat and tore his eyes away from where his fingers where to look her in the eyes. Please keep it together. He pleaded with himself. There was no way he was going to ruin this moment with her.

It was easy to forget all that had happened these past few months or so, or was it weeks? It felt like time had passed so strangely this past bit that she wasn’t even sure how long it had been. Anyway. It felt like the funk she had been in didn’t even matter anymore. It was forgotten, it was gone. All that mattered to her in these moments was that he was back. That Easton was back and she wasn’t dreaming because she could feel him, she could feel him right here. And it was too real to be a dream.
Part of her wanted to pinch herself anyway.
She just wanted to keep right where she was. She knew she was trembling. She knew that she had so much to tell him, and not much of it was really good. But none of that mattered in this moment. In this moment all that really mattered to Raine was that he was here, he was back at the academy with her. That was all that she really cared about. That was all that mattered in this moment. Raine had always been an easy to distract sort.
Oh she was smart. Just because she was easily distracted didn’t mean she wasn’t. But she was incredibly easy to distract. She just got so caught up in whatever was happening that everything else ceased to matter. Like right now she just wanted to touch him. She wanted to breathe him in. She wanted to know, for sure, in that moment, that he was really there. He was really in her arms. And dammit he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere else ever again. That was absolutely final and she would have put her foot down if she wasn’t damn certain she’d have put it down on Easton’s foot because she was just that close to him.
She reached up to cup his cheeks, just needing to touch him. She couldn’t stop touching him. She just had to. She had to. She couldn’t have told you why if she tried, it was just this aching need in her. Like she needed to rememorize everything about him all over again. It was so weird but she wasn’t really trying to think too hard right then, right then she really just wanted to feel. And tell him how much she missed him in that babbly way of hers. She was pretty sure she had to be annoying with her babbling. But he never complained.
He said he missed her too and a little smile played upon her lips for a moment. She couldn’t help it. She had been so worried he had just left her, that he hadn’t thought about her. Hearing the words, that made it not true. That meant he had missed her and it made her heart feel so full she thought she might burst. She shook her head when he said he was sorry again. She didn’t want him to keep doing that, keep saying he was sorry. If there was anything someone could say about Raine it was that she was quick to forgive. Most things anyway.
He pulled his face back from her touch and for a moment, just a quick moment,s he panicked. Thinking he’d pull back and pull way from her. She wasn’t ready to let him go though, he wasn’t allowed to let go of her yet or be out of her touching reach. It had been too long, so she was a little needy…she didn’t much care. She was craving his touch and if he thought…
But oh…
He didn’t pull back.
She relaxed and leaned into him, instead wrapping her arms about his shoulders, so they wouldn’t awkwardly stay where his face had been. She giggled a bit at the thought of something like that. He said he missed her, and brushed her hair back, his fingers lingered and her eyes dipped closed when they did, just wanting to feel his touch and forget all other things. Oh she had missed him, she had missed him so much. She felt like she could be still for a moment when she was in his touch. SO odd for such a bubbly girl like herself.
His fingers made circles and a soft humm escaped her lips, just a little noise. She opened her storm-colored eyes to look up at him. She nodded, not sure what to say, she had felt the same. SO the same. He spoke about letters and she blinked. Sh ehadn’t known that. Hadn’t known he did that. She wished he had sent them, she wished he had. But she wasn’t going to say that. Again he apologized and again she shook her head. ”Easton…please…don’t be sorry. Please. For me?” she asked, gently.
”I’m not mad. Or upset. I’m just happy. I’m so happy that you’re here and in one piece. I’m glad you’re in my arms again and I’m in yours. And that’s all that matters to me. I know, sounds simple but I’m a simple chick…and its all I need.” she said, softly. Babbling as always but it was heartfelt, entirely heartfelt from her. She leaned up to brush her lips against his, in a soft kiss. ”I’m just so happy, so happy right now” she said, beaming at him, entirely unaware of the battle going on in his own head.

He loved the way her body responded under his light touches, he had missed that terribly. It was easy to forget how easy things were here, with her…how much he longed to just crawl in bed with her and never leave the soft covers and her silky skin. He would happily drown in her, if she let him. There was the dry ache in the back of his throat that snapped him back to reality. The trip back home had taken him longer than he expected and he was too nervous to eat a single thing before he left. He needed to eat, to drink before he was even more tempted to sink his teeth into her delicate shoulder.
He had gotten too used to how things were while he was gone. He tried to keep the pained look off of his face as he recalled it. It was something he wanted to keep hidden, something that he didn’t want to admit to her. He’d been unfaithful. Even through things had been so complicated; he knew that he couldn’t makes excuses. He would have to tell her, as much as he didn’t want to. The shudder that threatened to slip its way up his spine was barely contained as he took another deep breath. He needed to focus on the here and now, why was that so hard? Nothing could compare to the softness and passion he experienced while with Raine. Nothing. What happened while he was gone wasn’t love or anything good. It was control, control over him. He cleared his throat and tried to focus.
He was listening; really he was despite the faraway look in his eyes. It made him feel so much better knowing that she was forgiving him. Her babbling made a smile slip over his lips if only for a brief moment, she was so cute. He leaned in to mimic her soft kiss after she was done talking, grabbing her bottom lip for a second between his teeth before pulling back to rest his forehead on hers. The increased beat of his heart was almost deafening. He pulled a sharp breath in. “I don’t want to let you go…ever…” He swallowed, his dry throat reminding him of what he needed. “…but, if I don’t get something to drink…” Was he shaking? “I’m going to sink my teeth into your beautiful soft skin.” His eyes slipped closed, keep it together. “As much as I love the taste of you, I don’t trust myself.”
He leaned back from her, only taking one step back. She was only an arm’s length away, why did it suddenly feel like a million miles? He took a moment hoping that he hadn’t upset her. Hands slid down from where they rested and he tugged his bag off of his shoulder. The letters. He pulled the zipper open and dug them out. “I know it’s a little late…” his brows furrowed as he looked down at the neatly stacked letters tied with a silky black ribbon. “You should read these.” [/i] His blue eyes looked from the letters in his hands to her face. “It will explain…so much.” He reached out and handed them to her, his grasp on them lingering for a moment. It was hard to write them, let alone hand them over to her. Those letters held so much of what he was feeling, what he was going through…what he had done. It wasn’t fair to keep it all from her and yet it was leaving an open gap within him to hand them over. No. he scolded himself, she needed to know. She deserved to know it all. Easton pulled his hand back and crossed his arms, taking another step back from her. There was this nervous tension building up in him and it left him feeling so uneasy. “I…I need to go.” He knew it was not what he wanted to say. All he wanted to do was curl up with her and never move again, but he knew how impossible that was right now. “I am not leaving.” His words were clam though he was shaking inside. He needed to choose between being with her right now and the need to fill his thirst. He hated it. “I’ll be back…”[/i] His gaze was intently upon her. “I promise.”[/i] He closed the distance between them to place a kiss upon her forehead. Easton stepped back and turned quickly moving towards the wall. With just a few movements he was up and over the wall out of her view. He leaned against the wall, squeezing his eyes shut forcing the wetness to stay there and not to slip down his cheeks. One deep breath and he pushed off the wall to slip into the darkness of the night. He needed to fill his thirst before he could return to her. he had gotten into the habit of hunting while he was gone. It was a habit he was going to need to break. For tonight, he’d have to give in…then he could return and give in to something so much better than the hunt. Her. Raine had missed him. SO much that even the tiniest touch from him made her so happy. She just wanted to wrap herself around him and never let go. Ever. She missed him so much it felt like she was finally breathing after holding in her breath for too long. Or maybe that was her being overdramatic. There had been a lot of other things going on too that had gotten her this way, but that was probably the main thing. The main thing was that she had been missing him so fiercely.
But he was back now! And that was all that mattered.
She told him all this, how she was so happy, how she had missed him, she peppered with soft kisses and didn’t care that she was babbling because he never seemed o care. Heck, she wasn’t even entirely sure he was really listening but that was okay. He kissed her again and she happily responded, her lips curving into a small smile with the bite. She closed her eyes, resting her forehead against his and just loving this feeling. That was all that mattered. She just found herself thinking that.
Maybe because she knew there was still so much wrong, and so much she had to tell him. But that could wait, for a little while longer anway. She didn’t want that to be part of their first conversation. But when he spoke and there was a but, her storm colored eyes reopened and looked up at him, really hoping that he wasn’t going to say what she thought he would. Subconsciously her hands tightened her grip slightly. She understood, he needed to get what he needed, and all that. But she couldn’t help it, when he stepped back a soft involuntary whine broke from her lips.
He took a step back and she was five seconds from crossing the distance between them again but she knew she shouldn’t. She should trust tha the knew himself and she shouldn’t screw things up. He held out a pile of letters and her face took on a more confused cast. He reached them out and she took them, or at least took ahold of them. But she shook her head. ”I’d rather hear it from you, however long it takes. I’d rather let you tell me, Easton” she said, softly. She would read them if that was what he wanted, but she really did want to hear it from him. She wanted to sit, ad talk.
She had plenty to tell him about, herself. Including her real damn name. She felt ashamed that she hadn’t told him anything, or any of that, yet. He had nothing to be guilty of in her opinion when she was holding back that much.
He said he needed to go and she shook her head, despite the logic all but five seconds from asking him not to anyway. He said he wasn’t leaving, but she wasn’t sure she could…oh but she trusted him. She had to believe him. She took a deep breath. ”Better not be” she said, her characteristic grin lighting up her face. She was good at the whole…laugh now cry later type of deal.
She closed her eyes when he kissed her forehead and took a deep breath. ”I’ll hold you to that” not her usual babble but it was all she could get out that wasn’t a huge long babble about how she didn’t want him to go. She watched him go and then took a deep breath. The letters were tucked into her own bag, which she scooped up, and she was on her way back to her own dorm. She was feeling a lot better than she had when she had first sat down. A small smile lit her lips. He was back. She could deal with missing him a little bit longer.
